Krakow Meetings on Russian Philosophy

“Nikolai Lossky in History of Russian Philosophy”

On 14–15 May 2026 the Krakow Meetings on Russian Philosophy, Daugavpils University, and Learn Russian in the European Union will sponsor a conference on Nikolai Lossky (1870–1965) and Russian Philosophy. The conference will be held at the Daugavpils University, Latvia.

Nikolai Lossky (1870–1965) was one of the first Russian religious philosophers to gain worldwide fame. Already in the 1910s his books were translated and published in England. He was born in Kraslava in the territory of the former Russian Empire (now Latvia). In 1922 he emigrated on a “philosophical steamship” first to Prague, then to France and to the USA. He taught in Prague, Bratislava, Paris, and New York. In 1933 he was a visiting professor at Stanford University. Nikolay Lossky developed an original philosophical system of ideal-realism, which he himself considered a development of the monadology of G.W. Leibniz. During his lecture tour to Warsaw, he was presented as one of the most outstanding followers of intuitionism, on a par with Henri Bergson. Lossky was also the author of The History of Russian Philosophy, which was first published in New York in 1951, was translated into French by his son, the famous Russian theologian Vladimir Lossky (1903–1958), and then into other languages. During the conference we want to delve into the biography and philosophy of Nikolai Lossky, and to better understand what makes him original and relevant. There will also be an excursion to Lossky’s hometown, Kraslava.
